What is Myofunctional Therapy?

Myofunctional therapy is a specialized remedial program specifically designed for the correction of the tongue thrust/posture problem. Most of the patients in our practice are referred for myofunctional therapy by an orthodontist, ENT, or other medical professional. The idea behind myofunctional therapy is to improve and train the muscles associated with  swallowing. If you think about how often we swallow, it is really important for us to be executing the muscles in the correct manner to make sure we swallow safely!

Myofunctional therapy moves in a hierarchy of steps and exercises. It is really important for patients and their families to practice! If you know someone looking for myofunctional therapy contact the Long Island Center for Speech at 631-689-6858.
